After about five months of trying without formally trying to get pregnant, my husband and I turned to ovulation test kits. We dabbled in using ovulation calendars, but we had no luck. Frankly, I find it difficult to predict ovulation because my menstruation is so unpredictable. I think lots of women my age - in their thirties - have similar trouble.
Ovulation test kits are something else. So far, not one of the tests I have taken shows me as ovulating. Either I am not ovulating or I'm just doing the test wrong, which is entirely possible. The whole process is rather absurd. Like a pregnancy test, you must urinate on a stick, but you aren't supposed to use your first urination of the day. You're supposed to take the test between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m., and the best results are usually found if the sample is taken after 12 noon, according to the instructions. (I've used the CVS and Target generic ovulation tests.) You're also supposed to hold your urination for four hours before you take the test and limit the amount of liquids you drink.
You also have to know when to take the test. There's a chart in the test kit that has you determine when to take the test. For instance, if your cycle lasts 21 days, then you should take the test five days before your period is due. If your cycle is 35 days, then you have to start taking the test 18 days before your period. This is annoying because the tests don't come cheap. The generic brands alone cost between $15 and $20. Some of the others can cost up to $45.
Of course, I personally have no patience. I want to know right away if I passed the test so to speak, so I put it down on the counter and stare at the urine-soaked stick intently. You're not supposed to touch it, so I don't. My new trick is to clean the bathroom while I wait the 10 minutes for the test to finish. During the time that I think I might be ovulating, my bathroom is sparkling. I guess something positive is coming out of this, even if it's not the test results.
Have you used ovulation kits? Do you think they work? I'd love to hear what others have to say.

I am trying them this month as well, and don’t spend so much on them I found some at the Dollar store and they seem to be working just fine. My Aunt swears by them.
Good Luck
There are a lot of things that you could possibly do. Weight plays a huge part in ovulation; if you have lost or gained weight that can make you stop ovulating. You should contact your doctor to be sure though. If not taken care of, there is a possibility of cancer as well.
Let me know if i am wrong anywhere
I’ve been using these tests around my predicted ovulation time-frame for seven months now. Sometimes I’ve gone so far as to test up to twenty days in a row. I’ve only had one test come up saying that I’m ovulating, but the lines were both faint and sketchy looking. I took a second test immediately with the same cup of urine and it came up as ‘non-ovulating’. What?! What’s funny is that my OB-Gyn put me on Clomid fertility medication just last month and I still am not having any results. I’ve probably spent around $200 on these tests. I follow the directions, which vary by brand. I’ve had many tests fail. Upon investigating I’ve opened some failing tests up and found that they’re missing parts, such as interior absorbancy strips or dissolvable tablets. Sometimes they don’t fully absorb urine, even if the test is sitting in a cup. I’d estimate that about 65% of mine have worked and the rest are faulty. Last month I bought the digital type test. The digital reader device stopped working after the second test. There was corrosion on the battery when I opened it. Why are these tests so pricey when they are so poorly made? Where is the qualitycontrol?
I bought the First response ovulation kit this month and it worked for me. At first I couldn’t figure out if the faint lines that were somewhat dark meant ovulation but when I got my positive result the test line was really dark. You may want to try this brand next time. Goodluck!
I too used the First Response ovulation kit last month. It worked beautifully. For the first time, I was sure I was ovulating. Although we tried to get pregnant using the kit, we were not successful. Still, we got a positive read out, which had never happened before. And it was quite easy to use. Thanks for the suggestion.
hi.
That tips are great, thank you ..
I love your blog…
thank you again carry on…
You’re welcome. I’m glad you found this information and blog informative. Good luck to all of you in your quest to get pregnant.
Clearblue digital is easiest and works the best.It only takes 3 minutes and shows you a circle if not ovulating and a happy face if ovulationg. Best of all the kit comes in sets of 20 for about $40 bucks on amazon. Which is not bad at all because it is error proof. We had been trying for 3 months and nothing until the test. It turns out I was ovulating about a week later than i thought. I am now thankful I bought it and hopeful to be pregnant this month. Wish me luck and good luck to all of you.!
Leanna, thanks for sharing this tip with us. That is a good price. Good luck to you! We’re all pulling for you. I’m inspired by your optimism. Thanks!
