Trash the Wedding Dress for a Great Photo
Some couples are opting for post-wedding photo sessions, called trash the dress sessions, where they can pose in unusual places without worrying about ruining their wedding attire. © Kara Pennington Photography
The holidays are just around the corner, so gifts for your husband or wife might be on your mind. Something that most newlyweds enjoy is something that makes them think about their wedding day. A framed photo, scrapbook, or slide show can make for a great personal gift. If you want to get really creative (and generous), then you can consider wedding dress art, where an artist uses a photo to create a drawing or painting of your bride's wedding dress. Another option is a trash the dress session (like the one in the photo above), where the bride, and sometimes the groom, get dressed up again and take artistic photos at unusual places without worrying about ruining your attire.

Wish we’d done that. Not that I spent a dime on the dress, but the wedding photos didn’t come out. The picture is a bit scary — falling apart house and a new marriage….
We took our wedding photos in an orange grove, right after our ceremony… it was wonderful and fun, and the colors turned out great!
Actually, my first thought was that the bride was posing with an old house that the couple bought to move to a new location and fix up. That actually made it seem romantic. But don’t get the idea that I’m one of those “sensitive” men or anything.
Whatever happened to saving your dress for your daughters?
I’m a big fan of the trash the dress movement. While some of the photos go waaaay too far into the fashion/art realm for my personal taste the majority of the images are exceptional and they are shots that could never have gotten while worrying about the dress. And most girls wouldn’t be caught dead wearing their mother’s dress anyway so there really isn’t a reason to save it.
I think this is a fun idea. You get the photos of the dress but don’t have to keep the dress itself (which your daughters probably won’t want to wear anyway).
Now that look’s FUN!
We also shoot Trash the Dress. It isn’t really about ruining the dress, it’s about getting fantastic photo artwork. No one wants to wear their moms wedding dress anyway and it may not be practical to have it cleaned and boxed up. But if you are looking for great photos that look like pieces of art for your wall this is it! We also do trash the prom dress!
