Your Favorite Wedding Moment and Why

Our wedding was small because my husband's mother was ill and we really did not know whether we would be able to carry out the wedding that day or not. However, it was a beautiful day. My closest friends were there. We were able to go to Regas (our favorite restaurant) for lunch.

What You'd Change and Why

Perhaps to have been able to invite more people and have a small reception following the ceremony. However, we had to hurry to get back to Stevenson Alabama because his mother was ill and we had to be home that night. Therefore, we did not get a honeymoon.

My Wedding Story

We met in Summer School at the University of Tennessee in 1965 in an "institute" for the training of guidance counselors. He was wearing a "lover's knot" tie tack and I commented on it the first day that since he had on the lover's knot that he must be a lover's boy.

We really did not pay much attention to each other for a few weeks until we went on a field trip to Cherokee N.C. to see their outdoor drama. I rode back on the bus beside him. Then our group went on a picnic to Cades Cove in the Great Smokey Mountains and we rode around the Cades Cove loop. That is where he first kissed me. It was true love at once.

Our Wedding

It was small with about 40 people attending. It was held in my church. I wore a dark blue suit and accessories with a white hate and gloves. One of my former girl scouts was my bridesmaid. One of the members of our guidance institute class was the best man.

Since my father was deceased, I walked down the aisle by myself.

Advice

  • Always say "I love you" every day.
  • Recognize your "anniversary" every month.
  • We could not have children, but we always managed to love the children of our friends as our own.
  • Taking care of an ill parent was not always easy, but with kindness and understanding on the part of my husband, we managed.
  • He always felt it was important that he do his share of housework as long as it was necessary for me to work.
  • He was just as kind to my mother as to his own.
