4 Ways to Cut Back on Spending

By Francesca Di Meglio, About.com

After spending lots of money to get married and get started on your new life together, you’re probably looking for ways to save money. It’s not as difficult as you think to cut back on your spending, cut corners, and live on a budget. Here are some ideas on how you can save money – and still fulfill your newlywed desires – from taking romantic getaways to decorating your home.

1. Use Coupons

The Internet and an old-fashioned newspaper afford lots of coupons on everything from groceries to home electronics. Start snipping out the coupons for things you use often. Don’t fall into the trap of buying things needlessly, however, just because you have a coupon for it. At couponing.about.com, you can find a list of grocery stores (broken down by state) that offer double coupons and coupons for pizza and restaurant chains.

2. Go Bargain Hunting

When you enter a store, head straight for the sales rack at the back and forget the rest. Look for good deals whenever you have to purchase something – from tonight’s dinner to a family car. For example, you can find vacation cost cutters – from scoop on frequent flyer programs to suggestions for cheap eats – and affordable wedding gift suggestions at the Coupon and Bargain Hunting site.

3. Commit to Comparison Shopping

It may take longer to determine which grocery stores have a better deal on the products you buy and you may have to make trips to more than one store to stock up on the goods, but it is often worth it to commit to comparison shopping. Using circulars and paying close attention to prices when you go grocery shopping can help you determine where you get the best deal on necessities – from toilet paper to olive oil.

4. Take a Cheap Vacation

Newlyweds need to take vacations, but they don’t have to spend their entire savings on them. In fact, you can find affordable airfare, discounted tickets, and bargain travel deals. You just have to have the patience to look for good deals online or through a travel agent.

5. Reuse and Recycle

Come up with creative ways to use old items over and over again. Instead of throwing away that glass mayonnaise jar when you're done with it, wash it, and use it to hold sugar or change. An article on the Budget Decorating site suggests using curtain rods to make a pot rack or a piece of glass and a terracotta pot as a table and its base. The point is to refrain from wasting items by using them again for new purposes.
