VEGETABLES

Most people don’t enough vegetables. Three-quarters of your dinner plate should be reserved for vegetables. Adding vegetables to dishes you were planning on eating can add flavor and help you work more veggies into your diet. For instance, you could make a bowl of rice and add sauted snow peas, onions, and carrots with a dash of soy sauce and Worcesteshire sauce. Incorporating a salad into every meal helps, too. But don’t limit yourself to just lettuce. Consider all sorts of green leaves, from arugula to radicchio. Top the salad off with tomatoes, carrots, corn, etc. Be sure to wash all fresh produce in cold water before cooking or eating it.

FRUITS

Many Europeans end their meals with a piece of fruit. This is a good habit to get into, so that you get the right amount of fruits into your diet. You can also make fruit part of your meals. Examples include mango chutney, apples in your salad, or strawberries in your smoothie.

DESSERTS

Baking requires attention to detail. You must carefully measure everything. The good news, however, is that you can fake it. Spruce up an already prepared cake mix by putting strawberry jam between two layers of cake. Add blueberries and a bit of sugar to the top of a purchased pound cake. Put ice cream between two chocolate chip cookies. Set up a sundae bar in your kitchen by putting out a couple of ice cream flavors and toppings, such as hot fudge, caramel sauce, sprinkles, chopped nuts, and whipped cream. You’re limited only by your imagination.
