Wedding Date:
July 31, 2010
Relationship Profile:
Chelsea Clinton, the daughter of former President Bill Clinton and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, and investment banker Marc Mezvinsky met at a conference in 1993, according to People. They were friends for years and remained close at Stanford University. Later, their friendship turned to romance. In 2005, they debuted as a couple at the opening of the Tao nightclub in Las Vegas, according to People. They've been living together in a downtown apartment in New York.
The Wedding:
Clinton, 30, and Mezvinsky, 32, wed at an historic estate in Rhinebeck, N.Y. in a ceremony that recognized her Methodist faith and his Jewish traditions. The couple even included clergy from both religions, according to The New York Times. The bride wore a Vera Wang-designed silk organza gown with a draped tulle bodice and metallic embellishment at the waist. Wang designed the bridesmaid's gowns and was a guest at the wedding. Burberry Creative Director Christopher Bailey designed the groom's tuxedo. Hillary wore an Oscar de la Renta gown. The bride and groom were surrounded by about 400 guests.
The Honeymoon:
Although the former First Family had a large guest list that included former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and actors Mary Steenburgen and Ted Danson, the ceremony and reception remained private. Security was tight and few details emerged without the Clinton's approval. That's why it's no surprise that there are no details about a honeymoon. One can only guess where the couple is going to celebrate their love. But Rhinebeck, N.Y. certainly got a boost as a romantic getaway after this wedding.
What the Press Says about Them:
The media were in full force for this wedding. People really wanted to see how the teenager who grew up in the White House turned into a blushing princess of a bride. Despite Chelsea's efforts to hide her face under large hats during the wedding weekend, the press caught glimpses of her. The Clintons shared a statement with the press immediately following the ceremony and a few photos, too. There is a lot of love between the media and this former First Family. Mezvinsky has remained an extremely private person, but his parents, who are divorced, were U.S. representatives and longtime Clinton friends.
What We Learn from Them:
This couple is the picture of maturity. They lived together before marriage and are finding ways to integrate different religious beliefs without either one converting. They also face challenges because of their parents' relationships. Mezvinsky's parents are divorced. The whole world knows about President Clinton's infidelity. Undoubtedly, the couple will have to deal with these issues in their own marriage because we tend to carry our role models with us. If they approach the past and the examples before them with the grace and maturity that they have everything else, then they will be great role models for us.
