Guide Review - MyPublisher Photo Album: Pros and Cons

I recently created a soft-cover photo album featuring photos from Thanksgiving weekend 2008, when my husband and I renewed our vows in the United States for family and friends who couldn't join us for our wedding in Italy. One bridesmaid and the best man traveled from Italy to the States to participate in the American festivities, and this book was our gift to them. It featured photos of the couple that were taken by our relatives and the professional photographer we hired.

The quality of the photo album I created astonished me. I started out by downloading the necessary software from the MyPublisher.com site, which took just minutes. Easy to use, the software guides you through the process. The first step is choosing the type of book you'd like to create -- simple soft-cover albums or more elaborate hard-bound books in fabric and leather finishes. I chose a soft-cover album because it would be easier to carry to Italy, and it's the most affordable. It cost about $13 for a 20-page book, and then I paid about $.50 for each additional page I included. I chose the cover I wanted -- there are a range of options including soft covers featuring one of your photos and fun graphic designs provided by the company but which you can personalize.

At this point, I gathered all the photos I wanted to include in the book and organized them -- starting with the bridesmaids getting manicures and ending with the vow renewal. Next, I had to post the photos into the formatted pages. There are few template options for each page, so you don't have a lot of creative choice. You can change some of the photos to black and white and flip them if need be. I did a few in black and white to make some of the color images pop. When I was done, I received my book in just two days -- and I received a second copy free with a coupon, which are often available.

I'm a professional wedding photographer and have had 2 wedding books published by My Publisher so far. Prior to using any publisher, I got online, did a bunch of research, even had one wedding book printed by another company. I found My Publisher to be of excellent quality and price and was exactly what I wanted to offer to my clients. There are a lot of companies out there that specialize in wedding books but I found all of these to be cost prohibitive for the average bride & groom who want a nice book within a limited budget. For example, I took advantage of their 2 for 1 special for an 8 1/2 X 11 classic hardcover book with dust jacket. It was 90 pages and it came to just over $140.00 which included tax & shipping. (Again that is for 2 books!) Now for the ease of use, firstly, the photos that you upload must be of good exposure and if they are not, you'll need to do color correction or other corrections in one of the many photo correction/manipulation programs out there. I use my Windows Live Photo Gallery to make most corrections and a older second program, Microsoft's Digital Image Pro for fine tuning and special effects. I also suggest keeping the photos you plan to download, a standard size. (ie: 4X6, 5X7 or 8X10 compatible). This allows the photos to be dragged and dropped onto whatever template you choose without having to resize the photo into the template. This way you won't cut off parts of heads, hands or other key pieces of your photo. If you do have photos that are an odd size - perhaps one you have cropped and can't be changed, you can place those photos on a page using the ""my styles"" templates. It is a matter of playing with the program. you can change anything you don't like. I found the software to be very friendly compared to another program I had used earlier this year. You can put a background onto a page, soften the colors (transparency setting) and then place photos on top of that. I did several of these for the last book I did. I found their quality to be excellent with no problems with odd colors. The books printed exactly like I saw on my computer screen. Now for some people their screens are not calibrated to what gets printed. I do have a program that calibrates my monitor to my printer and it apparently calibrated it for the photos I downloaded to the My Publisher site. (For those interested, the program is called ""Spyder 3 Express"" which is available at most electronics retailers.) As far as their customer support, I had a problem with my internet server. I had the bride & groom from the most recent wedding I did wanting additional books for out of state family. As I attempted to add this to my original order, my internet connection went down. That particular day was the last day of a buy 1 get one free special they were offering, so it was important to get the order in that day. (Who knew when the internet connection would come back online?) In any case, I called their toll free number, spoke to Ryan, who totally helped me place an additional order for 4 more books. He said they don't normally do this, especially during the busy holiday season. But I must have caught him on a slower day! I'm hoping my experience helps other people with choosing the best book publisher that is right for them.
