Red and White Floral Centerpiece - Francesca Di Meglio

I made the red and white floral centerpiece above for my mother's surprise 60th birthday party in September. It was simple to make, and it won rave reviews from my family. So, I thought I might share it with you as a way to wow your guests at Thanksgiving or any time during the holiday season. After all, if the table looks beautiful, your mother-in-law will have less ammunition to aim at you. Trust me.

All you have to do is get an oasis ball (these are foam balls that can be wet for holding real flowers in floral arrangements), which is available at your local craft store or online. Pick up gems or feathers attached to picks that can be sprinkled throughout the arrangement. I used a white cereal bowl I had at home for the container, but any bowl you fancy will do. Head to the local supermarket and get the most affordable roses you can find in the colors of your choosing. I suggest using roses because they fill up the ball well and can be cut to equal size, which is not true of all flowers. Wet the oasis ball according to package instructions. Place the ball into the bowl and then cut the rose stems down to your desired size and start inserting them into the ball. Remember not to keep the stems too long or you'll have trouble covering the entire ball. Insert your gems or feathers as you see fit. Voila' you are done. Then, you can just place the centerpiece on your table, sit back, and admire your work. And everyone will be impressed, including your MIL. Promise.

Because of the feathers/gems alone, it sounds extremely expensive to make, but it is lovely.

It’s not that expensive. The flowers are the real expense. Luckily, most supermarkets sell affordable flowers, even roses, nowadays. Or you could go to a wholesale flower market. The gems are not real diamonds and you can find them or feathers at the craft store, or even the dollar store. Sometimes, this stuff isn’t only near the floral arrangement supplies, but also by the kids’ crafts.
