Tomorrow, after five months in Italy, I am returning to the United States. But my husband won't be joining me for another month. For four weeks, we will have to communicate via Skype and phone. I miss him already.
We both come from different countries. We're both close to our families and have certain obligations to them and our work that force us to spend some time apart. We make it work by talking to one another at least once, but usually twice, per day. We tell each other the particulars of our daily life -- from funny things that happen at work to what we ate for dinner. And we make the time when we are together extra special.
I think the time apart actually helps our relationship. We get a chance to miss the other person, and we have time to ourselves for reflection, rest, and space. All of this makes us stronger. Still, I wish my heart didn't hurt so much every time we have to say good-bye. What do other couples who sometimes have to be apart do to get through it? Leave your comments here.
