How to Eat Healthy — and Save Money

Everyone is watching their pennies these days, and I'm no exception. But food is a big part of my family's life, and it's challenging to cook healthy meals on a budget. Most newlyweds are doing whatever they can to stay afloat during the recession, so I thought you might appreciate some tips about how to save money but still eat healthily. Here are some ideas that I've garnered from other couples:

Plant your own garden. You can plant everything from tomatoes to herbs such as oregano and thyme. If you live in the city, your building might allow you to keep a garden on the terrace or roof. Some places have community gardens, where you can keep a plot of land alongside your neighbors.

Don't let things you buy go to waste. If you bought zucchini, don't let it turn gray in the fridge. Use it. Make pasta with it one night and put it in a salad the next.

Pasta is your friend. It's an affordable, filling, and versatile staple in your pantry. You can add vegetables, olive oil, cheese, or chicken to pasta. The same is true for lettuce. You are limited only by your creativity.

Make food last. For instance, buy a whole chicken, cook it and turn it into a few different meals. One night you can eat the chicken with rice and carrots, the next you can make a chicken club sandwich, and after that you can make chicken soup. Three meals for the price of one.

Eat at home together. This way, you know exactly what you're eating. Besides, restaurants can be pricey and getting cozy at home, cooking together, and enjoying each other's company is priceless. Just don't forget to leave room for dessert -- each other.
