Why Every Newlywed Should Know about DIY Renovations
Thursday August 7, 2008
For some reason, after you get married, people expect you to know how to do stuff around the house. That's not always how things work. I myself have become somewhat handy. But I still have moments where I'm at a total loss of what to do. For instance, this morning the water from my washing machine overflowed out of the basin sink and onto my floor. It turns out it was all my fault because I put two little throw rugs in the machine and the fibers from them clogged the drain. I spent this evening getting the water still in the sink out of it and further drying things that got soaked.
The lesson I'm taking away from today is that newlyweds should educate themselves about DIY renovation and fixing things. While some things must be left to a professional, minor renovations or repairs can usually be handled by the resident of the home. Trust me. It's better than having to wait -- and then pay your life's earnings -- to a professional.
Whether you rent an apartment or own a home, you and your spouse will thank me for this message the next time your kitchen faucet springs a leak and you have to change it or the tiles behind your stove need to be replaced (something I recently had to do), or the toilet overflows on a Sunday during a holiday weekend. By the way, the toilet, if it's going to overflow, will do it on a Sunday during a holiday weekend.
