Newlyweds Going Back to School
Tuesday July 22, 2008
In my other life, I write about business education and MBA students. Since most graduate business schools require applicants to work a few years before returning to earn the MBA degree, many MBA students are already married -- and some even have children. Every one of the students who is already in a relationship or marriage tells me how difficult it is to balance school and family. It brings some tension to the marriage because usually going to school means taking on additional expenses and giving up time with the family. In the case of the full-time MBA program, spouses are leaving the workforce entirely to go back to school. There are married folk in all sorts of graduate programs, law school, medical school, etc. And it's hard for each of them.
Why do they do it? For some, it's a requirement for their particular job. Others want to improve themselves. Many others want to switch jobs or careers and need additional education to get their foot in the door. Ultimately, the vast majority of them are thinking about their spouse and family when making this sacrifice and putting in the work to go to school. They know that education will help them in their careers, could improve their salary, and will make them more knowledgeable people. Still, some spouses are upset when their husband or wife decides to go back to school later in life. What do you think? Let us know by voting in the forum poll.
