Support Your Spouse
Friday July 18, 2008
When you marry someone, you sign on to be his or her number one fan. That job requires loyalty, stamina, and a big heart. You have to defend your spouse, believe in him or her, and dream with him or her. In this way, marriage is like the Bon Jovi song, "Living on a Prayer." (I can say this without any ridicule because I'm from Jersey, where Bon Jovi is king.) "We've got to hold on to what we've got/'Cause it doesn't make a difference/If we make it or not/We've got each other and that's a lot/For love - we'll give it a shot!"
What we learn from hard working Tommy and Gina, the protagonists of the Bon Jovi song, is that you have to stand by your spouse even when times are tough. If your spouse is facing hardship, such as a sick parent or unemployment, you might have to step up and pick up the slack for him or her for a while. He or she will have to do the same for you eventually. That's what marriage is -- doing for one another, being a team.
